Hello Castlemont Families,

Despite distance learning and a quiet field full of geese, our programs are in full swing.  We will not be able to have our New School Year Family Picnic or our Fall Family Fun Fest, but you can still stay connected, participate, and contribute to Castlemont through the following activities:

Annual Charleston Wrap Fundraiser

This is the first week of the Home and School Club's annual Charleston Wrap fundraiser.  Since this is one of the only real fundraisers that we are able to host in the foreseeable future, we are hoping to make it as successful as possible. The fundraiser is 100% contact free in that all orders are placed online, paid on the website and mailed directly to the person making the purchase. The school gets up to 40% of the purchase price of each item back and our sales goal is $10,000.  The sale ends October 30th. Castlemont's code is 11751. Click here to start shopping. Please share this link and our code with your family, friends, and co-workers.

School Site Council Parent Representative

Would you like to participate in the school group that provides feedback regarding our school site budget? Nominate yourself or someone else for our School Site Council. Watch you email for the online form this week.  Elections will be held the week of September 28th.

Coffee with the Principal

Our first Coffee with the Principal will be held on Zoom at 8:30 am on Friday, August 18th. The theme will be "How to Support Your Child in Distance Learning." A Google form with registration information will be sent home next week.

I hope you will consider participating!

Hello Castlemont Families,

In our Wednesday staff meeting I asked our teachers to reflect upon the meaning of the word "courage."  I provided a quote and a definition from our Character Strong curriculum: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” -Nelson Mandela. In child-accessible language: Courage is to choose what is good, right, and kind even when it is hard or scary.

I then asked our teachers to respond to one of the following prompts through the lens of their current teaching experience:

  • How have you already practiced courage in your life?

  • What challenges have you overcome? How did these challenges teach or change you?

  • What helps you persevere even when things are hard or scary?

Common themes came to the surface: learning how to use tech tools was a challenge; getting support from colleagues was vital; and very significantly, we need to do this for our students.

I know that having your children learning from home is challenging and requires a good measure of courage while navigating new technology and finding a way to balance work with distance learning. Try answering the  prompts above and then pat yourself on the back for being courageous in the face of something none of us have ever experienced  before. I am happy to say that we have early-on reached the goal of having every one of our students participating in the distance learning school day, and it is because all of us have been brave enough to tackle the new and unknown. Well done!

There are additional important ways you can support our school community and your child's learning.  The first is by joining our Home and School Club. The HSC is continuing to support Castlemont students, teachers, and parents even during distance learning. Joining is FREE and is a tremendous way to demonstrate your interest in our school community. Complete this short Google form to join.  Castlemont HSC Membership Form

The second way you can support your child's learning is to encourage them during our upcoming iReady assessments. The assessment window opens next Tuesday, September 8th.  Distance learning means that assessments must be done from home. I ask you to watch the following video and read over the infographic.  Supporting and encouraging without helping with answers will be important to gathering accurate learning data.

Thank you for continuing to make Castlemont a very special place.

Updated Wed, Aug 26th

Hello Castlemont Families!

Congratulations for nearly completing your first week of official distance learning.  Monday had an interesting start ... pandemic, wildfires, and let's add in a Zoom issue too! By 9:00am the great majority of our students were logged on and in their morning meeting,  reminding me that what counts is not the problem itself but the way the problem is handled. Thank you to our patient parents, our resourceful staff, and our resilient students.  What a great team our Castlemont community makes!

If you have not already signed up for a virtual home visit with your teacher, please do so right away.  We have the gift of time this week to work out the distance glitches and more importantly, to provide some one-on-one time with your teacher.

Tomorrow, Friday 8/28, some of our grade levels will be distributing more materials.  Your child's teacher will communicate to you the time and place.  Please note that not all grade levels are handing out materials this week.

Another upcoming event is our virtual Back to School Night.  We are coordinating the date with middle schools and I will share the details within the next few days.

Please reach out to us at any time-- we are here to serve our students and our families.

Updated Wed, Aug 19th

Hello Castlemont Families,

We are excited and ready to start the school year!  I'd like to share some important beginning of the year information with you.

First, the answer to the question, "Who will my teacher be this year?"  Your teacher emailed you last night  to introduce her/himself  and welcome you to her/his class.  If you do not receive an email, please check our class lists.  Students will be identified by their five digit student number only, not by name.  For returning students, it is the same  number you used last year.  For new students, you will find your ID number in an email from the school district regarding student placement for the 2020-21 school year.

NOTE: As I write this article it has come to my attention that there may be a technical issue preventing our PowerSchool emails from being sent.  If you did not receive an email, please check the class list .

Your teacher will be sharing via email a sign-up for a 20 minute virtual student/family visit next week.  This visit will give your student a chance for some individual time with their teacher before we start the rigors of our academic program.  Having a strong relationship between student, family, and teacher is key to being successful in a regular year, and especially in distance learning. We are intentionally investing in this time with this in mind.

Please remember that the first day of school is this Monday, August 24th. School begins at 8:20 and we will be taking attendance daily. Your teacher will share with you a link to your morning class meeting.  If you do not receive the link or have an issue logging on, please contact your teacher. Teacher emails are on the Castlemont website under "Staff Directory."

If your child is ill and cannot participate in class, please call our attendance line ASAP at          408 341-7047.

Here's to a great school!

Yours Sincerely,

Kristen Kimoto Prindle

Updated Mon, Aug 17th

Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! I hope you are all well and ready to start our new year together.  Despite the unusual circumstances of our learning environment, we are committed to providing a quality education to our students in a safe and engaging manner.

The following are some important dates and information for your calendar:

  • The first day of school is Monday, August 24th.  We will be taking attendance just as we do during a “normal” school year.

  • SCHOOL START TIME: 8:20 a.m.

meeting on time, just as you would arrive at school on time. Teachers will provide their

individual class schedules and login information next week.

  • DISMISSAL: 2:30 p.m.

Distance learning schedules will vary by grade level. Students should plan to be engaged in learning from 8:20-2:30, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

  • WEDNESDAY DISMISSAL:

As during in-person instruction, Wednesday is a shortened day.  We conclude instruction at 1:30.

Teacher Assignments will be emailed to parents the evening of Wednesday, 8/19.  If you do not receive an email from your new teacher, please refer to an upcoming article on the Castlemont webpage on 8/20 that will list your assigned teacher.  Students will be identified by their five digit student number only, not by name.  For returning students, it is the same  number you used last year.  For new students, you will find your ID number in an email from the school district regarding student placement for the 2020-21 school year.

Technology

Each Castlemont student may check out a Chromebook.  If you have one from last year, please keep it to use this year.  If you did not check one out last year, but would like one this year, pick-ups by grade levels and times are listed below.  A parent signature is required.   Please note that each student living in the same home may check out a device. (We could only offer one per household last year.)

Next week, 8/19- 8/21

Technology and student materials pick-up times are scheduled for next week according to grade level.  Please adhere to social distancing and wear a face covering.  The schedule is:

Your first week, 8/24- 8/28:

  • Daily Schedules will be provided by your teacher during the first week of school.

  • Individual Teacher-Family “Visits”

Teachers will be emailing each of their families to schedule individual 20 minute virtual family visits. We feel this contact and connection is particularly important when starting the year without person-to-person contact.  We want our students and parents to have the chance to meet their teacher!  Please keep an eye out for a communication from your teacher next week.

  • Week One Expectations-- you can expect the our first week together in distance learning to look different from the subsequent weeks.  We are investing in the social-emotional well-being of our students by taking the time to meet with everyone individually. Every class will hold a morning meeting and an afternoon closing to bookend the school day. This will also be good practice for logging on and off of our online platforms. Beginning-of-the-year assignments and activities will be provided. While we are anxious to start with our academic curriculum, beginning with a solid connection to each student and family will make learning at a distance more comfortable and successful for all of us.

Though our building is closed, we are available and committed to helping you!  Our office hours are 7:30a.m - 4:00 p.m. Monday- Friday.  Please call (408) 364-4233 for assistance and answers to your questions. We are also happy to schedule in-person, socially distanced meetings.

My final thought is this-- I am so lucky to be here at Castlemont as part of this wonderful community.  We got in some good practice with distance learning in the spring and will continue to learn and improve how we educate our children in this manner.  I want to thank each of you for your ongoing support.  I remind myself, and you, that this is not forever, and we will come back together in-person even stronger as soon as it is safe to do so. Until then, a virtual hug to each of you!

Sincerely yours,

Kristen Kimoto Prindle

  • HORA DE INICIO ESCOLAR: 8:20 a.m.

Sinceramente tuyo,

Kristen Kimoto Prindle

Updated Sun, Aug 16th

Hello Castlemont Families,

I hope you all stayed healthy and safe during your vacation.  All of us are busily preparing for your virtual arrival on the first day of school, Monday, August 24th.  Whether you are participating in the four-phased or year-long distance learning option, we will all begin this year in virtual classrooms.  Our teaching staff officially starts their year next week, though many leave their unpaid vacation early to get a jump on the year.

As we continue with distance learning, you will notice that your child will be involved in more synchronous ("live") lessons.  You can expect to hear from your teacher to set up a time to meet you and your student the first week of school.

Class lists will be posted online using your child's student ID number on Friday, August 21st. No names will be posted online and we will not be posting class lists in front of the school as we usually do due to social distancing concerns.

The school day will start at 8:30 and end at 2:15.  Students will not be in front of a screen the entire school day. Attendance is mandatory and participation in the distance learning classroom is an expectation.  Students will receive grades.

Technology will be handed out next week to our incoming kindergarteners, new students, and those with more than one Castlemont student in their household.  Learning materials will also be handed out .  We will be asking last year's kinder students to return their borrowed iPads to exchange for a Chromebook. I will send a School Messenger email and voicemail with further details regarding the pick up times. Please check your voicemail and email regularly for updates.  We miss all of you!
