Get in the groove by rockin’ your fluorescents and bust a move on over to the Castlemont Multi-Use Room for a Totally 80’s Family Dance on Friday, February 1st, 6-8 pm. Pre-ordered tickets are $8 each and will not be sold at the door. Only 300 tickets are available, so order early! All children must be accompanied by a parent. This is a teacher sponsored fundraiser to raise money for the classroom. Come rock your 80’s apparel and join us for an evening of some rad fun! It would also be totally awesome if you could donate cans of soda for our concession sales (Coke, 7 Up, Root Beer). Donations are due to the office by January 31st. Thanks for your help!
This week in the library, we read the book Say Something by Peggy Moss. In Say Something, the narrator sees and hears teasing, put-downs, pushing, excluding and other forms of bullying behaviors at her school. Because she’s confused about what to do, she doesn’t do anything at first. However, her responses change as she gains understanding and empathy.
The book’s message to say something is a call to action for all of us to move from the passive role of bystander to the positive, active role of UP-stander. We discussed our power to become UP-standers who support and include every student at our school so that everyone belongs and feels safe.
Here are some of the ways to be an UP-stander that we discussed:
- Refuse to join in with bullying behaviors.
- Use positive peer influence to help friends "do the right thing".
- Say or do something when someone needs help. (Just standing next to someone will make him/her feel better!)
- Help all kids join the fun. Invite someone new to play!
- Help friends find positive things to do and say.
- Laughing and joking with friends is fun, but laughing at a friend can hurt.
- Help kids "save face' when they are in a tough spot. Help them get away and be safe.
- Always get an adult if there is violence or a weapon!
We hope you will talk with your child tonight about being an UP-stander. To reinforce the message at home:
- Talk about ways that each family member is an UP-stander at home!
- Review the Bully Triangle with your family.
- Role-play different scenarios to practice UP-stander behaviors, words you can say, and actions to take if someone needs your help.
- Review ways to be a bucket filler and swim free of bully behaviors.

Just a reminder that our Winter Break begins on Thursday, December 20. We will return to school on Monday, January 7. We hope you enjoy your days off and have a safe and happy holiday season with family and friends.
If you are waiting for your preordered Spirit Wear t-shirts and sweatshirts, unfortunately, there has been a delay. We are hoping that they will arrive by mid-January. And we still plan to have extra stock at that time for sale. Again, we apologize for the delay and hope to have the Spirit Wear to you soon!
Our schools have many systems and partnerships in place to assist us with student safety, including alert family and community members who can be extra “eyes and ears” for us.
Our QuickTip system offers a confidential way for students, parents and neighbors to report bullying, suspicious incidents, vandalism or other safety related information online, by email quicktip [at] campbellusd.org, or by phone (408) 341-7171.
We appreciate your support with keeping our students safe.

We have extended the deadline for Rutherford's Read-A-Thon pledge forms. The Read-A-Thon helps raise money for Castlemont's Library and your child can earn great prizes, too. The Pledge form was in your child's Monday envelope a couple of weeks ago. Additional forms are available in the school office. Please be sure they are turned in to the school by Wednesday, December 12.
