Rutherford the ReadAThon Dragon

Parents, did you know that the World Famous Castlemont Library has a dragon watching over it? We do!! His name is Rutherford. He will be hosting a Read-A-Thon for all Castlemont students. The information for this Read-A-Thon will be in your child’s white Monday envelope on October 24th. The Read-A-Thon will run for 3 weeks. Your child will get sponsors (family, friends, and neighbors) to pledge money for each book read during the 3 week time frame or pledge a flat rate. After the 3 weeks your child will collect the pledges and complete the log and pledge sheets and bring them to their teachers. The money collected will help to update the nonfiction, Spanish, and fiction areas of the Library. They will also be used to purchase 3-4 Chromebooks for student use in the Library. THANK YOU, RUTHERFORD!! FOR HELPING THE LIBRARY!!

One of the most important decision-making groups at Castlemont is our elected School Site Council. The Council is composed of five parent and community members and five representatives from the school’s staff.

The Council reviews the school plan annually, establishes a budget, makes modifications as necessary, and assists in the evaluation of the school’s programs. Members are elected by the groups that they represent. Parent and community representatives and alternates are elected for a two-year term and may stand for re-election upon the completion of each term.  If you are interested in running for the Council, please submit your name, with a short biography, to the front office. .

There is currently 1 seat to be filled. The candidate receiving the most votes will serve on the Council as a parent/community representative. Write-in candidates receiving votes have an equal opportunity to be elected or serve as alternates on the Council. We meet 6 times throughout the year on weekday afternoons at 3:00 pm.

District Reorganization Update

Administrators for Campbell Middle School provided a status report to the Board in relation to their work at the school since June.

During the summer, they oversaw:

  1. Facility clean up and minor campus improvements, including tree replacement, outside seating for students, and removal of lockers that were inadequate for campus needs.
  2. Hiring faculty, creating team-building opportunities for the school employees, re-initiating the Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) system, and establishing the new Instructional Leadership Team (ILT).
  3. Reviewing and adjusting systems, such as creating a common lunch period, a singly daily bell schedule, and increasing instructional minutes.
  4. Building the Transformation Team—which will include students, staff, neighbors, administrators and other community stakeholders—to meet and develop a plan for the school’s transition from middle school to a grade TK-8 school.

Strategic Plan Update

Superintendent Eric Andrew reported that work on the five objectives aimed at achieving the district’s Strategic Goals is going well.

He noted that work on the goals has progressed well with many of the objectives met. He added that some of the deadlines needed to be extended to October and November, due to changes in administration staff and union leadership and to allow the Strategic Planning Committee to consider revising the “Schools’ of Choice” goal’s wording.

Slides from the presentation can be seen on request or online at www.campbellusd.org/pastmeetings.
