Castlemont’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Student Council is collecting NEW UNWRAPPED toys to donate to Toys-for-Tots, a nationally recognized program sponsored by the United States Marine Corp, now through December 15, 2015. Please help make the holidays special for a boy or girl in our community. Toys must be new and unwrapped. Games, art supplies, and books are always welcomed, as well as traditional toys for children from toddlers to teenagers. Please send toys to your child’s classroom. Student Council members will pick them up.

Thank you for spreading good cheer this Holiday Season!

When making your holiday plans, please don’t let vacation time take away school time. Winter Break is Dec. 21, 2015 through Jan. 01, 2016. School resumes January 4th! We want all of our students to be ready for the future, and attending school every day is the best way to prepare them for success.

As the holidays approach, so does the stress, especially for children. Here are some helpful tips that may help you reduce stress in your household.

Limit TV and video games — It's very easy at this time of the year to allow the TV and video games to become the babysitter, but children who are stressed also need physical activity or exercise.

Remember routines — For parents of small children this is especially good advice. During the holidays children will find their routines disrupted. They are often dragged along on shopping expeditions or taken to events over which they have no control. And when a routine is broken, stress can result.

Nutrition — Plan at least one healthy meal as a family every day. When shopping, don't forget to toss in a healthy snack for you and your child.

Family traditions — Family traditions offer great comfort and security for children when everything in their lives is being disrupted by the holiday season.

Attitude check — Take a deep breath and have everyone in the family pledge to make the holiday season a time of joy and peace.

Castlemont recognizes that to promote academic achievement, students must also be supported in their social development. Therefore, we have implemented the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program. This is a structure that is maintained by the school district so that children have the necessary social support systems in place that in turn help to support them academically.

As part of the PBIS program, we establish clear rules for the behavior we expect in all areas of our school. We explicitly teach those expectations to the students and reward them frequently with positive incentives for their good behavior. At Castlemont we do this by handing out Caughtcha Cards for demonstrating the school’s 3 Rs of Respect, Responsibility and the Right to be Safe. Students are taught what it looks and sounds like and they are part of the school culture daily. All staff working at Castlemont participate in helping students make good choices and to recognize them by giving them Caughtcha Cards. A Caughtcha Card is an incentive for doing the right thing, which results in positive awards and recognition.

It is our philosophy that by teaching children, in a positive way, the appropriate behavior that is expected of them, they will be better equipped for making the right choices.  The expectations for all student behavior are clear throughout our school, which includes playground areas, cafeteria, office, restrooms and classrooms.

You should be able to ask your student, “What are the rules in your school? How do you follow those rules? What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules?”

We believe that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community in which all students have an environment in which they can succeed and grow.

Over the years we have learned that classroom seat time leads to academic success, which is why we want every child in class every day. As much as possible, appointments need to be made after school hours. If you must make an appointment during the school day, please bring your child to school in the morning and then check out your child at the office later in the day before the appointment.  If the appointment is first thing in the morning, bring your child to school following the appointment so that he/she misses the least amount of instructional time as possible. In order to excuse the late arrival or early checkout, please bring a note from your doctor. Let’s continue to support our children by keeping them in school.

Become an ABC Reader in your child's classroom (K-5)!

By volunteering just two to three hours per month, our Asset Building Champions build relationships with young people by reading selected books and leading classroom activities and discussions with a focus on respect, tolerance, peaceful conflict resolution, caring and friendship. Children learn what to do if they encounter bully behaviors and how to become an UPstander.
